Information about Derek Yu's latest shareware game is finally out. Aquaria is set to be released in early 2007, and was submitted as an IGF competition entry as well.More details available from Derek's blog and the official site.
Top ten things you need to know about Aquaria:
1. Shareware, non-linear 2D adventure game with underwater setting.
2. Mouse-only control scheme with 360 degrees movement.
2. Several times bigger than Eternal Daughter.
3. Very little text dialogue, only voice narration.
4. Main character has to sing to cast spells.
5. Change form using spells, each with a different playing style.
6. No HUD or health gauges, only one mini map on bottom right of screen.
7. Some puzzles, no keys to collect, lots of optional areas to explore.
8. Huge bosses, some occupying half the screen.
9. Price: 20 USD. Platform: PC. Release date: Spring 2007.
10. It's cool.

ReplyDeleteOH MAN I AM SO PSYCHED FOR THIS GAME.
sounds like areal yawnathon.
ReplyDeleteLooks pretty but the mouse control puts me off. I really hate using a mouse to play games.
ReplyDeleteWHAT? No mouse? You, my anonymous friend, are no PC gamer. Pah!
ReplyDeleteDerek removed the post from his personal site. Tim, I believe it is your duty to find out his motives (I already have some idea) and recover that post!
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you gave a summary is really good though. That's all we have now...
this looks like a game for chicks. might get my gf off the sims for a couple hours.
ReplyDeletedefinitely psyched. Derek is pro with pixels, but this looks much cleaner. I think it was a good move. Interested to see how the game plays.
ReplyDeleteshoot, i bet all of you naysayers will be hushed once this deal is let loose on the world ;)
ReplyDeleteyou may think it looks girlie now, or are put off by mouse controls, but i can bet that it looks mind-blowingly wonderful in motion (still screens and the real deal running are completely different beasts), and that the control is perfect for the creators' vision. i doubt it's not a very conscious decision to ensure that the player feels completely connected with the character (being able to fluidly move and interact just as she would if she existed).
can't wait for this one.
