You know, I've thought about trying La Mulana for awhile, but now that I've seen it in motion, I'm sold. Top of my list of things to play.

La-Mulana only seems good at first, but the further you play, the deeper it gets, expanding into a sprawling epic that dwarfs almost every other platformer in existance.

As for the controls being tough - part of the charm, or so I think. Reminds me of first-gen Castlevania. Mistakes are easy to make, and are harsly punished.

dominic white tells the truth. When I first started it, I was put off by the grind at the beginning, but once it picked up, I was more interested--and once I began exploring more of the backstory of the worlds, I realized that this game is amazingly deep and complex for a platformer, and in every aspect--graphics (primitive though they may be), music, plot, weapons and item usage--it manages to perfectly evoke an epic, eerie, somber atmosphere. But like in the dating sim video, it can also become completely hilarious and walks that line really well.

I like it even more than Cave Story, though I still think both are absolute gems of their respective genres and shouldn't really be compared to each other, as Cave Story has a decidedly different mood and gameplay approach than La-Mulana.

I'd say this game is easily as good as Cave Story. Much longer, much harder, just as much atmosphere, it's sure to appeal to different people than Cave Story does.

Indeed. Cave Story is a very different game, and I don't think it's entirely fair to compare the two.

Cave Story is basically a refinement of everything that made classic 16-bit platformers good, from the easy lead-in to the use of a solid character-based narrative to hold it together.

La-Mulana is the same story, but for 8-bit games. All the challenge, pain, trial-and-error and vicious puzzles of the games of yesteryear. While there is a (surprisingly deep and complex) story, it isn't nearly as character-driven as Cave Story.

Oh - and for anyone put off by La-Mulanas initial difficulty, don't worry. After you get a couple of life gems and the warp-grail, you'll almost never die in combat. The game doesn't get any easier, but at least the challenge comes from puzzle-solving and exploration, rather than getting killed by those goddamn bats.

Oh yeah - and Deceased Crab (guy behind this LP - the Something Awful boards have a whole forum dedicated to narrated playthroughs like this) just found out that he's getting blogged. Seems rather shocked that everyone is paying him attention.

the atmosphere of the game was brilliantly executed for me. the general scope of the level designs and environments are just creepy, and the fact that they did that through 8-bit graphics and old school tunes is just awesome.

but for me personally, i would have enjoyed it 100 times more if the puzzles weren't so insanely cryptic. it's one thing to have a challenge, but it's another to be completely stuck and being forced to read an entire walkthrough for the rest of the game.

I actually like La-Mulana better than Cave Story - mainly since this one's more focused on the adventure/exploration part than the action.
Also, the game's HUGE and manages to be interesting througout.
