JTR's The Crypts of Despair (a bite-size roguelike game by the creator of Death Worm) was recently updated to version 1.0. The biggest addition to this release is an online high score table.
Use the F1 function key to access game instructions, and press the F4 key to switch between windowed and full screen mode.
I can't put my finger on why this game is so compelling, but it certainly is. That little, pixelated tombstone that appears when you die---ah, so perfect.
I think the food mechanic adds a lot. Every step costs you, so every step counts.... and when you're out of food, and there's no food in sight (so your HP decrease by one per step), the tension is incredibly high.
I once died from starvation a single step away from food. High drama, that. Like the guy crawling through the desert gasping "water, water" who finally passes out with the tips of his fingers in the oasis.
i've experimented with max-offense and max-defense items/stats, but i have no idea whether one was better than the other or whether i just got lucky/unlucky with the randomness.
Tim's "Two points in damage, everything else in health" strategy made a world of difference for me. If nothing else, it meant that I was able to drink potions willy-nilly, even as a toad.
