A one hour video of the IGS panel has been posted at GameSetWatch. Participants include Derek Yu (Aquaria/Bit-Blot/TIGSource), Greg Costikyan (Manifesto Games), Mark Morris (Introversion), and Eric Zimmerman (Gamelab). I found the conversation pretty interesting, especially the analogy at the beginning that Greg started and Derek moved into hilarity.

Ha, ha! Indeed Derek's butt/cheek/pants analogy is like the text of the year! That made me laugh SO hard. :-D

Ah - another thing.

I agree with Eric Zimmerman that consoles probably won't be the driving force behind indie games.

I mean - XBLA etc. is great but the people that buy consoles, especially ones like XBox 360 or PS3 (not the Wii) are mostly hardcore gamers that tend to focus on graphics and mainstream gameplay mechanics. Sure, they may download the occasional indie game but that's not what they have bought their consoles for.

On the other hand nowadays virtually every home computer is connected to the internet. Most people probably didn't buy their PCs for gaming purposes but it's quite easy to stumble upon some indie games... How many housewives have discovered casual indie games for themselves? Even I got into indie gaming by sheer coincidence although it was a long time ago.

Information spreads MUCH faster over the world wide web than any focused services like XBLA or PS Home - they have as much impact (or as little) on the online distribution of games as things like Reflexive Arcade or Steam...

Back on topic:

What the panelists said about game reviewers is SO true. =)

I actually AM a reviewer for several Polish gaming magazines (paper, not digital) so I know that first-hand...

Sadly the chief editors don't let us write too often about indie games. :-(

Bah - Tim deleted his off-topic comment and now it seems as if I were the only one commenting on this video. :-P

I find all these videos strangely entertaining although I'm not even a game developer myself (but a games journalist like I mentioned before)...

I should thank Greg for pointing me in the direction of Kieron Gillen's article about abusing the press - you can find even more truth about us journalists in there... The article could have been written by me if I were a native speaker of English and had Kieron's talent... I would have mentioned the same things, however...

A surreal Derek and a most interesting discourse, if I may say so...
