Purgatorio

Warning: Contains strong language and graphic scenes.

Purgatorio is a short adventure game by Jonathan Lynch which tells the tale of Frank O'Shea, a soldier on a peacekeeping mission who was knocked unconscious and injured in the line duty.

He awakens to find himself wounded and in a strange, but somehow familiar town. The game features a mix of photograph and hand drawn art, with the results looking far better than another similar attempt called Soviet Unterzogersdorf.

Purgatorio 72690 Downloading now. The screenshots remind me a lot of Police Quest 4. Masq smells like spyware to me, why do I have to be online to play this? I developed Masq. It's free, no ads and no spyware, I swear. We just want to promote it. Our first business model was to sell "lives" so keeping you online allowed us to control how many times you played. We also can deliver ads, surveys or messages between episodes, but only inside the game, and we're not currently doing it. But if we decide to do it, you can always close the game. Or delete it with the folder called "Prefs" thatit generates in the same directory.

Google us, there are many posts on the web. We're clean.

Javier This game rocks! Fedora Spade Episodes 1 and 2 FEDORA SPAAAADE! WOOOOOOO! HOOOOO! One downer on it, though... I'll have to hear about it all evening on Msn from one of my crewmembers today... and probably tomorrow =D What a refreshingly old-fashioned idea. Excellent find! Gnome, it's not a find. It's something quite some people've been anxiously waiting for. And now it's out =D Btw, anybody knows how many episodes this'll have? I think Orchard-L said 5 or 6, but I don't think even he's sure. I think it's one of those "keep writing it till it gets boring or he runs out of ideas for cases" type thing, the detective novels work (like the Mike Hammer or even Sherlock Holmes stories).

Also I should mention that episode 1 is more of a prologue than a full episode, episode 2 is much longer, so don't be surprised if episode 1 is over in half an hour or something. As a long time fan of adventure games, console-style or point-and-click, I have to say these are a lot of fun. Though it's annoying to have the music restart practically every time you press a button. Hmmm, yikes, that isn't supposed to happen. It's probably GM's default MIDI function acting out. This problem has been mentioned a couple of times in GameMaker's forum along with the memory issue, but it looks like the developer isn't going to fix these problems any time soon. One thing for sure, I'm ditching MIDI for OGG/MOD usage to avoid this problem in future episodes.

Orchard, Well, kon-tiki it wasn't something I knew... Not that it wouldn't be worth waiting for... :) I'm playing Episode 1. The game runs smoothly until the flashback of the homicide. Once it's over, it becomes painfully slow. Anyone experienced such occurrence? It's a pity since the game is really cool so far. Hmmm, I'm not really sure why this is happening at all. Can you post your computer specs, by any chance? I know this sounds really ridiculous given the retro-presentation of the game. The game shouldn't use that much RAM or CPU usage in theory, but the GM engine is a real sucker when it comes to memory management. I also had a slowdown problem when I was still using my old computer. The text would scroll slowly at some point of the game. It usually runs fine once I reboot the computer though.

Orchard, P4 2.7 ghz, one gigabyte of ram, Ati Radeon 9250, Windows XP Pro. I rebooted but nothing happened: the game starts fast, then I load and becomes slow. I would be less surprised if it was slow from the start (for example, AcidBomb 2 is a no-go for me). I just finished the second one as well Bongtastic! Loved the cheesy character names. (One trivial thing - "Squid" is slang for someone in the Navy, not the Marines.) Since the game runs in a window, I was going on while browsing the net. When the doctor was about to leave... The game suddendly returned to normal speed! Well, at least the slowdown was in the, let's say most boring, part of the prologue episode. The flashbacks were the best part. Ooops, that slip about the squid is pretty embarassing :o, I'll be sure to have it edited for the next revision. So psst... do they have a slang for someone who's in the Marines? :0)

Davide, I'm absolutely stumped on this one. You have a decent computer, so I don't think the problem is with the memory or CPU usage. I rechecked the source code, and can't find anything wrong with it either. Maybe I should try compiling it as a GM7 executable, maybe that'll do the trick. Seems a little farfetched, but I dunno, the GM engine can be pretty random at times. Slang for a marine? According to Wikipedia, leatherneck, jarhead, or even Devil Dog. Oh! Were you supposed to be able to at least look at the autopsy report (the one you weren't allowed to take) in... err, *dead person*'s apartment near the very end? It seemed like a red herring of sorts. I look forward to episode 3! Yeah, you are supposed to be able to do that. It's a minor bug, but I fixed it and uploaded a new version a while ago. The autopsy report is pretty unimportant as a whole though. Unfortunately, I must give up. The second episode starts at normal speed, then it goes to slow-mo during the interview with The Russian, back to normal speed, and finally, when i enter the morgue... it goes to super-slow-motion. I hope mine is an isolated case.

If you can try recompiling the episodes when you have time, I'll be glad to test them. Just so that you know, I haven't forgotten about the Vista version yet. I'm still going through my list of grammar errors/typos. It will also have a fast-forward function to skip textboxes. La Croix Pan the link is broken, mate.
