Kairuga

Kairuga is a short shooter demo by Kairos, featuring the iconic gameplay system from Treasure's Ikaruga. You can switch the polarity of your ship by pressing the X key to absorb enemy bullets with the same color and charge your special weapon. The emphasis is on scoring where destroying three enemies of the same color in a row will earn you one chain, and bonus points are awarded for getting a high number of chains.

The only drawback to an otherwise brilliant shmup is it's length, with only one level on showcase.

Kairuga Well, even though it's short, I meant it to be a mini-game. I simply don't have the time to create a full scale shmup dedicated to the whole game.
It took me about a month to finish the game for public testing;
However, I haven't see any worthwhile Ikaruga clones or tributes - The best I have seen is the boss battle with Eboshidori, the first Ikaruga boss, made in Flash. Cheers for the developer. So I feel pretty good that I have created at least a worthwhile level to play. Thanks!
Even though Kairuga may not be completely bug free yet (I'll just have to find out if anyone posts a bug, then it's the final release), I'm thinking of a new concept.
I'm tight timewise, school's around the corner, which means less time for game development.
But perhaps more time for small mini-games and tributes, ;). I loved this game - great work on a great tribute to a great game! :D Brilliant, visually striking and made me play with my Dreamcast again (I'd somehow been ignoring it for the past 2 months)

If you visit the download page, you'll see that the location has changed to another part of the forum, and the game just keeps getting updated with fixes for bugs :P Bad, I am so sad:

;_; eXceed 2nd VAMPIRE I must be one of the few people who actually owns Ikaruga (DC version) and finds it pretty dull... I notice you don't have the courage to give your name ;)

Bill nah I just don't want to sign up for yet another net account thing... I'm trying to cut down as it is.

I'm just struggling these days to find shoot 'em ups I like to play. All the abstract stuff (like Kenta Cho's games) do nothing for me either... No I still play and enjoy games like Gradius, R-Type, Parodius, Axelay, Uridium 2, Battle Squadron, Gaiares, Macross Scrambled Valkyrie... hell even the really old stuff like Space Invaders and Galaga. Ikaruga's gameplay just didn't hook me and I found the polarity switching more of a nuisance than anything that enrichened the gameplay. Never keen on those gaps in the gameplay in these ones with 3D graphics when you stop shooting for a while as the camera follows the ship to the next scene. And I generally like loud catchy music playing too...

Don't worry I'm not an FPS fan. The Timesplitters games on my PS2 are the only ones I really spent any time on. I like the 2 player co op mode with no fussy net connections and all that... and it has monkeys :D

I come to this site mainly because I despise the commercial PC market and just look for nice small (filesize) games with no fuss and no hassle to get running. A game with good gameplay and some attractive pixel art does me fine. That platform game with the hammer some places down was good. Shame the creator of the game ain't gonna finish it...
