Bite the Bullet is the latest creation by 9_6, developer of the colorful Hyper Wars: The Mega Firestorm. The game plays very differently from standard shooters, in which the player has to avoid bullets for as long as possible to increase the bonus count.

Shooting with a bonus greater than ten will activate the autofire mode and imbue the ship with temporary invulnerability. The number of homing projectiles shot during this period depends on your bonus counter.

Press the A key to shoot and hold the S key to activate the slow motion mode, but only if the gauge shown at the top right of the screen is filled up. This bar replenishes steadily over time, and holding the same button will change your ship into a hit box, allowing players to easily dodge bullets.

The bonus counter increases when the player doesn't fire any shots. Destroying an enemy ship awards the player with a health collectible, though acquiring one can be a rather difficult task as your adversaries do not stay around for long.

Found this gameplay vid of a homebrew game called "Odyssen" by SteevTee on YouTube. The game is said to be in an early development stage, but the graphics are already slick and the gameplay looks fast paced and varied.
The author describes it as inspired by Gradius and Treasure's shmups, which probably rings well in a lot of ears.
The player attack mechanics look and sound very interesting:
- A total of 6 main weapon systems, each has strengths against different enemies, ie, Napalm is good at close range and against bio foes. Reflect is ideal for enclosed levels. Lightning for larger electronic enemies. Blade is powerful all round but short range. Fusion creates chain reactions in destroyed enemies. Pulse is a rapid all-rounder (ie Vulcan).
- A beam weapon is charged by collecting blues and by grazing enemies and their shots. Activating beam will turn all shots to blues, which in turn will keep the beam firing longer.
There's a thread about the game here. Why not give the guy some feedback and encourage him to keep working on it.

Frederator Films, an indie feature film company with the aim of producing 2-D animated genre movies with a budget of below $20 million, had recently announced three upcoming projects - with one of them being a claymation feature based on The Neverhood. The original creator, Doug TenNapel will be involved as the writer and director.

As stated by Doug himself, "I have absolutely no desire to redo the Neverhood game look... that was what it needed to be for 1995. I'm putting everything on the table story-wise and saying, What is the Neverhood about and who is Klaymen? I've been redesigning the characters and figuring it all out again with a feature-length story in mind."

Press Release - Developed by Budcat Creations and scheduled for a Q1 2008 release in Europe, Blast Works: Build, Fuse & Destroy is a side-scrolling shooter that lets players craft the game to their liking by building their own levels, ships and enemy ships. In addition, players can "absorb" the pieces and weapons of destroyed enemy ships to bolster their own defenses during battle.

Across more than 15 different land, air and sea missions, the goal of Blast Works is to destroy enemy ships while continually growing your own into a massive craft by absorbing their fragments. Players can also upgrade their ship in the Hangar by customising weapons, propulsion systems and armour. Creative types will further enjoy building a ship from scratch with the Ship Editor and then testing it out in combat on a custom level they've built with the Level Editor. To defend the Hangar, players must use the Wii Remote like an anti-aircraft turret to shoot down enemies attacking from all angles. Finally, the game's 2-player cooperative mode lets players work together to blast enemies, fuse debris to grow their ships and finish the mission as a team. Wilfred, the Hero is a rare breed of RPG Maker games with entirely original content, save for certain sound effects. A collaboration between Brandon Abley and Teo Mathlein, the story is basically about two buddies named Wilfred and Kyr-Stan on a quest to save their world and rid it of evil once and for all.

Of course, things are never simple especially when the hero has doubts about his destiny. This theme is explored frequently, and the accompanying soundtrack does a great job of setting each melancholic scene perfectly. Some may remember Teo as the artist responsible for Sunset Over Imdahl, which explains the Misao award it won for the best visual consistency category.

The main characters are easily some of the strangest, with Wilfred acting as the Pyramid Head wannabe and Kyr-Stan assuming the role of Lugaru reincarnated. There are no potions to gather, since Hit Points and Mana Points are restored completely after each battle.

This download only chronicles the first chapter, while the music is available to download from this page.

Excerpt from GamesIndustry.biz:

Too many developers are making "cheap knock-offs" of successful games and holding back growth of the casual games market, according to Jason Kapalka, chief creative officer at PopCap Games.

With low development costs, studios are able to churn out copycat games in a short time, but these titles rarely make enough money for developers to grow past a hand-to-mouth existence, says the PopCap founder.

"Very few games are developed without reference to past games. There's always going to be titles that build on a previous mechanic or game. But there's a fine line between that and very bold-faced rip-offs that aren't adding anything to the game and are just trying to make a quick buck," said Kapalka, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

A finalist in IGF's 2006 Technical Excellence Category, Switchball's (then known as Crazy Ball) publisher was never made known to the public due to contractual terms. But digging through some dirt has revealed that the big S might possibly be the secret party which is expected to distribute the game once it is completed and ready to ship. Coincidence?

Based on impressions from the demo, Switchball has often been described as a spritual successor to Ballance - another ball-shuffling action puzzler. Presumably the new build will support the AGEIA PhysX physics hardware. Demos for both Switchball and it's predecessor are still available for download from Atomic Elbow's web site.

Stencyl (Java-based) is a new game development tool which allows games to be made with very little effort spent on programming. As described by the team:

Stencyl is a universal platform for tile-based game creation with an emphasis on user-friendliness and adaptability to many different genres. In other words, it's a tool that lets you create practically any standard kind of 2D game in existence.

StencylWorks, the game builder for Stencyl, is the tool that you'll be using to create games. It will be unveiled later this year.

3D games are not supported, but all creations made using this open source freeware development tool will run on Mac and Linux as well. I'm skeptical, but a lot of promises were made and if the developers keep their word then it could possibly rival Mark Overmar's popular Game Maker.

Hurrican is essentially a modernised, graphically-updated, feature packed version of Turrican. As with the original, the levels are large (and beg to be explored), the enemies come thick and fast from all angles and the game is far from a pushover. The artist for all of Bloodlust Software releases in the past is working on a new AGS adventure game under a new banner, Gnarled Scar Manipulations. As explained by the developer of The Knobbly Crook:

You play as O'Sirus the Snip, a simple paper farmer who realizes he is connected to something much bigger. He'll struggle to join the Royal Guffaloon, the Crookian warrior police, he'll end up in the massive stronghold of the Bogold Empire, and eventually he'll be on the front lines of a huge war. I can't hide the rock, paper, scissors theme with my screenshots, so I'll say it has a big part of the way things work in the Knobbly Crook. Magic takes many strange forms, and O'Sirus controls those three elements (Tic is his paper bird).

A short one room demo is available for download.

The first CPS3 arcade system board debuted in 1996 with Warzard (known as Red Earth outside Japan), and more than ten years later the encryption that prevented MAME from running CPS3 ROMs were finally circumvented by Andreas Naive. Haze (David Haywood) then quickly went to work on the emulation, with all of their current progress documented on this page.

Games that were running on the CPS-3 board are as follows:

Warzard/Red Earth (1996)
Street Fighter 3, New Generation (1997)
Street Fighter 3, 2nd Impact: Giant Attack (1997)
Jojo's Venture (1998)
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1999)
Street Fighter 3, Third Strike: Fight for the Future (1999)

Owners of defunct CPS-III arcade system boards or scratched Dreamcast discs now have an additional option to relive these Capcom classics.

Cluster Funked is another strategic shooter by Jph which features similar gameplay elements from Gyro-Phyter. Your first task is to take control of a red well, which will then produce green units for deployment and defensive purposes.

Tap the K key to shoot, and use the J or L key to strafe. Rapid fire can be activated by holding the fire button, but will cause the gun to heat up and locking your weapon until the cool down period passes.

Your ship can grab up to five green pawns using the I key, indicated by triangles around your craft. To respawn, simply move towards any green well on screen.

Gyro-Phyter is an abstract shooter by Jph with strategic elements. The objective of the game is to weaken the green wells and turn them red, though the green side's defensive turrets will try their best to thwart your efforts.

Use the arrow key to move your ship around, and tap the I key to place a red turret. To retrieve a turret, simply hold the I key for a few seconds. Red turrets destroyed in combat will float back to base for the player to collect and redeploy on the battlefield.

Okay, maybe not Clean Asia II. But nearly a sequel in a sense. It's cactus' shmup-dev game number two. This time the game seems to be very retro.

The title is "Akuchizoku", which is bad Japanese for "Evil Blood People". The current plan is to have it play for five very different levels, with the possibillity of an additional small bonus level or two. You get to pilot at least five different fighters, and the game will have a custom made score by John Marwin plus an in game storyline. And it will be shareware, because both authors are apparently in need of funds.

However, there is no price on the game, instead the "customer" makes a donation of at least $1 to get his copy of the full version. Generous donators will be extremely appreciated and therefore get their names in the credit (and possibly a few subsequent cactus games for free, if the economic situation allows it). For those who feel that games should be free to play, there'll be an optional demo version with a bit over 60% of the content from the full version available for download. Note that the full version will probably be released for free whenever there's no point in requiring donations anymore. So anyone who "buys" the game shouldn't consider it that way. Look at it as a donation, and feel that you've done a good deed instead.

The obtrusive advertisement before the game starts is unfortunate, but if you can past that, the game itself is quite a lot of fun.

Kevin's post about the new Gibbage.co.uk:

Just revisited gibbage.co.uk, haven't been there in a while but the blog used to make me chuckle alot. Anyway, the world has gone crazy and it's become a game portal! Crikey!

Graham has added an informal second interview to his site, with Bob Fearon of Mersey Remakes. It's a whopping 34MB and nearly 50 minutes long, but is, as usual, well worth the download!

ProfPuppet's Last Scenario walkthrough (near spoiler-free) is now available in both text and zip format. As described by the man himself:

It's around 70 pages and should cover almost everything a player could want. The only improvements I could make at this point would be triple-checking for errors, listing two optional boss general strategies I missed, all boss strategies, all item descriptions/locations, editing for consistency, and a complete enemy bestiary, but I'll only do that if a bunch of people want it.

The document contains:
- walkthrough for the main plot
- information about all optional content
- every single boss/reward/hex/items which can be stolen
- a listing of spellcards (unique and highest stat percentage bonus cards)
- location and method of acquiring each Hex card

ProfPuppet's contact details can be found in the document, should you feel the inclination to thank the author for all his efforts.

Kudos: Rock Legend is the latest game from Cliffski [Kudos, Democracy], quietly released back on Friday the 25th of May. The game is a rock band simulator, where you play as the singer in a struggling band attempting to make it big. In some respects it's quite similar to Cliffski's last game, Kudos, but is pleasantly mixed up with entertaining minigames that have you composing songs, mixing your album and practising with your band.

Gametunnel wrote an exceptionally positive preview of the game a couple of days before its release, stating that "[...] nothing will prepare you for just how fun Kudos: Rock Legend is", and that "Rock Legend is shaping up as one of the best games of the year", for whatever that's worth. As for my opinion? The game is certainly quite a lot of fun to play, and well worth checking out. Definitely Cliffski's best game to date.

Paradroid Paradroid is a game by Andrew Braybrook that was originally released for the Commodore 64 in 1985.

Yes, I am writing a review of a 22-year-old game. Yes, this retro-review deviates a bit from standard Arthouse Games practice. I justify this deviation with the following two excuses: 1. I never played the game when I was a kid, so it's new to me (and probably new to many of you, too); and 2. there's very little modern grist for the Arthouse Games mill (art games are few and far between). That said, I'm not sure that Paradroid is an art game---more like an interesting landmark in the art of game design.

Okay, first things first: how can you play it? Paradroid was re-released as Paradroid 90 on the Atari and some other platforms. It has a few modern remakes for PCs (see http://paradroid.sf.net, http://paradroid.ovine.net/, and http://freedroid.sourceforge.net/). All of these remakes differ slightly from the original in graphics or gameplay, but they're probably the easiest way to get a taste of Paradroid on a modern computer.

This review covers the original 1985 version for the C64---you can download a disk image of that here: paradroid.zip. I played it on the VICE emulator, and I had to download C64 system ROMS separately (from this package), since they no longer ship with VICE for legal reasons. I unzipped the paradroi.d64 disk image, mounted it as a disk in VICE, and auto-started the program on the disk. I had a bit of trouble here and there along the way (Paradroid is looking for a joystick---or emulated joystick---on port 2), but I was able to get Paradroid running smoothly with a bit of perseverance. If this process sounds too involved, try one of the remakes linked above.

SKT had recently updated Red White Yellow, their color matching puzzler, to include several new tracks and sound effects. From the original review:

The objective of the game is to remove tiles from the screen by connecting six or more blocks of the same color are connected to each other.

The current type of colored blocks which can be removed from the field switches whenever a chain is made.

Pretty much the sequel to Seiklus, in spirit if not in form. cly5m has been secretly working on a new project entitled Avaus, with at least 130 rooms to explore. As described on the autofish site:

In this game, you'll pilot a ship on a rescue mission in a dream world. This is a pretty large project, and I hope to have it finished in 2007.

eXceed3rd-JADE PENETRATE- is the latest vertical shooter from the eXceed series, with much of the interface and gameplay mechanics simplified to allow accessibility for new players while challenging veterans as well.

Extra lives are awarded when the extend gauge is full, while options are granted with each charge of the reinforce bar. Collect small bonus items marked 'P' to increase the extend count, and grab the large ones marked 'D' to add one percentage to the reinforce counter. Bombs are launched using the X key. Hold the Z key for your primary means of attack, and press the C key to focus your shots.

When fighting a boss, a position marker shows up on the bottom margin of the screen, indicating where the boss is on the horizontal axis. Both easy and original modes feature two stages only, though the player will be rewarded with additional boss attack patterns for choosing a harder difficulty setting.

Immortal Defense isn't the first Game Maker project to go commercial (see Mr. Chubigan's Shellblast and MAGI), plus developers rarely reveal their sales numbers to outsiders - hence it's a kind gesture by RPGCreations to publish not only sales stats but their marketing strategies as well, with the intention that the information can be of some use to other independent game developers. [recent interviews]

Interestingly, Mr. Chubigans had also set himself a sales target of fifteen copies for Shellblast each month (before being published on a major game portal), though no official numbers have been made public yet.

RPGCreations (creators of Missing and Alphasix) announce the release of Immortal Defense, a story-based tower defense game.

The classic elements of tower defense are there: players must use strategically-placed towers to fight off waves of "creeps", preventing them from getting to the end of the path. The player can build new towers or upgrade existing ones to defeat the ever-more-dangerous "creeps", earning money for each kill--money which can be used to expand and refine the basic defense even further.

Immortal Defense features eleven unique towers (or "Points"), each with their own distinctive personality and style of fighting. Each Point represents a different aspect of the player's will and personality.

The mouse cursor is an integral gameplay element. The cursor fires at enemies in its range, giving your overall defense an extra boost at critical moments. The mouse cursor also allows you to "target" specific enemies, involving the player more closely in the action than the typical tower defense game (where it's sufficient to simply place all of your towers, sit back, and watch your strategy in action.)

Strangely, there's little swearing in this episode as the upcoming platformer by Jonathan Blow earns glowing praises. As Graham puts it:

It's the most original and fresh platform game I've played in at least ten years, and almost every single puzzle in it will make you grin with happiness and clap with appreciation at the cleverness of it.

Braid is almost like a series of six different games, each of which has a uniquely excellent and original gameplay mechanic except you're getting it all in a single package.

DHC is currently adjusting the difficulty level for their first shareware release, Vulkaiser (which probably means adding more bullets in Japanese terms). Updated screenshots will be posted on the game information page soon, and the developers are suggesting the possilibity of co-operative play through the internet. Either that or I read the translated text wrong.

They have also stated that the game may not meet the expectations of many, which is pretty much what Pixel said before the release of Guxt. Admittedly current screenshots do little to instill confidence, but DHC had set an admirable standard with their freeware releases so it's quite unlikely that Vulkaiser will be disappointing to any extreme.

Also interesting to note that Vulkaiser was announced on the 1st of April, so it could be a two-month long joke and the final product may be totally different from what the images suggest. [DHC's web site, past projects]

Monokey has announced their participation in the latest Shmup-Dev competition, with the entire Force Majeure team reuniting and the introduction of a new member named rayraytea. Force Majeure is still set to debut as a shareware title this winter 2007.

Will the final product adapt a sketched look (like Eraser) or can we expect more pixelated eye candy? Here's hoping that we are able sample more than two levels with the induction of a another sprite artist, but the contest could be tight as X-0ut, Linley and cactus (Prototype, Excellent Bifurcation and Clean Asia) will be involved as well - all winners from previous Shmup-Dev compos. Alex Adventure is a cute platformer, somewhat on a par with Lyle in Cube Sector in terms of creativity used for enemies and environment. Jumping feels a little strange at first but once you get past this, the gameplay focuses on running, jumping, shooting, exploring and solving small puzzles. Fortunately the gameplay mechanics actually work quite well and the game itself has a good deal of charm.
